hideho. . .
this question has probably been asked before. .
but what do you reckon is the next best thing
or rather, closest thing to the (elusive) electrix repeater.

i'm looking for an imogen-heap-style non-pedal loop station.
any ideas?

(happy new years . .)

nothing in the hardware market will morph loops, retaining their rhythm and tempo if you change pitch
or retaining their pitch if you morph their tempo besides the Repeater.

Imogen Heap now augments her live show with Ableton's LIVE, a software program
run on a laptop utilizing separate midi footpedals or controllers.

Ableton's live, unlike the Repeater, does NOT HAVE 1st loop capability.

In other words, you have to use some kind of a live loopign VST plugin or standalone app
if you want to make a loop from scratch that DOESN'T have a prearranged tempo.

Because I'm good friends with Zoe Keating who has toured with Imogen, I'm fairly certain that she is
using a repeater (or two) in conjunction wiht Ableton's LIVE.

On a PC, If I were you, I would invest in a decent laptop (and run WIN XP NOT WIN Vista)

Then dowload the wonderful freeware program MOBIUS (until the imminent release of MAtthias Grob's
LOOP V hits the market which should be soon) and use it as a VST instrument to record your
first loop, then have it's tempo drive Ableton's LIVE via midi.

Be prepared for a considerable learning curve and a considerable economic investment (Laptop, break out sound card,
Ableton's Live Softare, Berhinger FCB 1010 mid controls).

If you just want multi tracking (and don't need to change the pitch or speed of your tracks) wiht very high fidelity
and a radically smaller learning curve and finacial investment, do yourself a huge favor and
buy your self a one rack space LOOPERLATIVE. 8 full bandwidth stereo tracks that you can either sync together
or not.............................unbelievably easy to use. They normally will set you back $1500 but if you contact me off
list, I'm almost positive I can get you a discount on that normal price (as I"m demoing it for Looperlative at the up and coming
NAMM show). You do need to invest about $150 in a Berhinger FCB 1010 midi foot controller but it's a cinch to get this thing
working.........unbelievable easy and intuitive (and quick!) to learn how to program.

If you want pitch manipulation, then LIVE is your only change............unless Sony will put out an interactive live version of
SONY Acid (and why don't they do this).

Ableton's is avalable for both MAc and PC but Mobious is not , to my knolwedge. LOOP V will be, howver.

Zoe Keating, I believe is using SOOPERLOOPER on a MAC with LIVE if I"m not mistaken.
She's awesome if you haven't checked her beautiful looped cello music.

SHe's also played with Rasputina and Imogen and is a MAJOR player.

good luck and let me know if I can be of assistance.

      hey Rick

      wow.
thanks so much for this substantial response. . i've been checking out the looperlative . .
will perhaps take you up on that offer and contact you later. .

      much appreciated

I also have to report (to be fair) that here at the NAMM show I've discovered that
Ableton's LIVE version 8.0 just added a live looper giving it it's first ability to
do what they call '1st loop capability'.

that's means that by using a midi footpedal (which the Looperlative also requires)
you can make a loop of any length and then Ableton's allows you to move and rercord
        loops in real time.

the thing about using Software in a laptop environement, means that you have to own
a good laptop, expensive software, a good breakout sound card box and a midi footcontrol pedal.
In the long run, you have a lot more control of your loops after the fact (and Albeton's saves your loops)
but it is quite a bit more expensive and represents a considerably higher learning curve.

Bob Amstadt, by the way, is very close to adding a compact flash card ability to save your loops.
This should occur within the next month or so, I think.

        Good luck, Julia

          By the way, Julia,

If you get involved with this and are interested, I will, in a heartbeat, book you into a 30 minute performance
as a 'newbie' at the huge Y2K9 International Live Looping Festival (third weekend of October in Santa Cruz,
          California).

It's an amazing festival: last year i brought 50 artists from 8 countries to perform in the 6 days (in 2 cities) of the
          festival.

One of the coolest things about it, is that all 50 artists perform every 30 minutes on two adjacent stages, continuously
(with no breaks at all) from noon to midnight, two days in a row.

Besides that, when the newbies peform (and I'm always trying to encourage people to participate even if they've never performed
in front of an audience before) frequently, some of the worlds' most advanced loopers will be there at noon in the audience to cheer them on.

there is a communal vibe in this live looping community that I have not seen in any musical movement since, perhaps, the late 60's in the
          psychedelic era in San Francisco.

Come join us .......you'll be so glad that you did.

If you are interested, please email me off of TRIBE at
looppool(at sign)cruzio(dot sign) with this in capital letters in the header
(so my aggressive spam filter doesn't snag it)

          do it!

            hi again Rick

thanks so much for all this information. the festival sounds a rad thing to be a part of. or just observe.
i'm a total novice at this stage. .i mean, looping wise.
            let's see how i develop.
actually i'm now thinking about a boss or a boomerang.
i've been jumping from looper to looper in my research. this will probably continue for a bit.
i mean, initially wanted a non-pedal but i think that was just my imogen-heap fixation.
fingers so busy with keyboards and little harps and things. . .why i was against using feet is anyone's guess.

            okay thanks again
