LOOPERLATIVE LP-2 MINI looper unveiled at the ANAHEIM NAMM show this month

I'll be demoing the brand new LOOPERLATIVE LP-2 MINI looper at NAMM
later this month in Anaheim.

I was tapped to choose the feature set of this small stomp box pedal that is going
to revolutionize the inexpensive live looping market and I"m pleased to say that Bob Amstadt
included every single feature on my dream/wish list.

Priced around the price of a LINE 6 DL-4 or Digitech Jamman it will have these features:

RECORD/OVERDUB
PLAY/STOP
PLAY ONCE (single sample)
PLAY ONCE/CONTINUOS (essentially a play retrigger)
MIDI SYNC in/out
28 Level of UNDO (including UNDO set points for every 10% of FEEDBACK)
FEEDBACK control
1/2 SPEED (and unlike any pedal on the market: 1/4 SPEED)
REVERSE
ONBOARD STORAGE of up to 8 LOOPS (on a 4 meg CFC card)
QUANTIZED REPLACE features at these musical intervals:
1/8, 1/16, 1/12, 1/24, 1/7, 1/9, 1/10, and 1/64 (for glitching replacement)

Return of the JamMan

Yes, the JamMan is coming back as a pedal from Digitech. It features a slot for a Compact Flash card. It includes one with storage for over 24 minutes of record time and 99 loops. If you get a 2-gig one, you can have up to 6.5 hours of record time. It has USB connectivity, but doesn't seem to have MIDI, a curious choice in my opinion, but perhaps they have a way of hooking up to MIDI thorugh a USB to MIDI adapter. Lots of inputs: 1/3 inch, 1/8 inch for CD input (it sums stereo into mono), and an XLR microphone input. Includes a power supply. 44.1 kHz CD-quality audio. A six-year warranty.

Doesn't have all the slice and dice features of a new EDP, but street price is a few cents under $300.00.

Line 6 M13 Stombox Modeler - Is it good for looping? vs Boss 50 and EH 2880

Hey loopermen (and women) - does anyone have an opinion on this device?

It's a pretty impressive thing that looks like a bunch of different pedals welded together!

My friend uses it for his ambient guitar looping / drum machine project White Marsh.
http://www.youtube.com/user/VJFranzK#p/u/28/FCbERB8DTKM
(yes my projections, of course ;-)

It has many FX in one unit, you can use a few at once, a nice value for $

Does it only let you record and build up one loop at a time, though?
(Not flip a few loops on or off at will, as some do?)

My brother is deciding on a looper for his guitar,
(and we play together sometimes, me on Electribes, so MIDI synch really matters)
he seems to like the Boss 50, but I want to make sure he is well informed before choosing!

Thanks

live solo/looper setup question

I'm not sure if I should get one of the loop boxes (custom A/B/Y type) or go with a mixer. here's what I want to do:

I have a boomerang looper pedal. I have some guitar pedal effects that will be before the 'rang in an effects loop. I want to loop an acoustic guitar and 2 vocal mics.

I have an (A) acoustic guitar (taylor with a lr baggs M1, 1/4" instrument) , (B) Shure green bullet vocal mic (1/4" instrument) and a (C) shure beta 58 vocal mic (I can get an impedance adapter or use a preamp if needed).

I'd like individual inputs for A, B & C. One effects loop that can be used with A, B, & C; together or independent. Individual outputs for A, B & C. I want the A, B & C outputs to always be on, whether the effects loop is on or off for that input. i.e, the only selecting is whether the effects loop is on for inputs A, B and/or C. otherwise it's a bypass box.

this is for live performance to either a small mixer to powered speakers or a 3ch acoustic/vocal amp....DI for each channel to the FOH board, so without another mixer I'm not sure how to obtain the ease of selection a switcher pedal would give me.

any advice is appreciated, right now I can perform with the effects on all three inputs at once thru an effects loop of an acoustic amp...but to turn the effects loop on and off for each input would be great.

I've also hooked everything up to a mixer and can control the effects loop thru the aux sends, but this is by hand and defeats my purpose (on the fly changes with a foot controller).

thanks, Chris

Aloha, I read a thread on this forum from 2007 that came close to answering burning question I have: Is there an easy way to feed just the first loop to the drummer? Right now we're sending the entire signal to the drummer. The only way I can see to do it is to put an a/b box after the loop and manually swith over. But that means more foot tapping. Any other ideas? I'm using a Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro Plus. thnks!

Hi folks,

This is my first time posting here and though I have been playing around with looping for a couple of years, I'm still very much a neophyte. I know of Rick through the Yahoo frame drummers forum as well as other groups I belong to.

The question I have is regarding a post Rick made awhile back (if not here, then another group) but I would welcome answers from anyone who can help. I have an upcoming art gallery gig in which I will be doing a solo gong performance (as in me by myself, not one gong...but boy, wouldn't that make it challenging to keep it interesting...but I digress). I would like to do some looping but will not have access to power. Rick, I know you did a gig at PASIC using a battery powered amp. What amp did you use and does anyone else have a good recommendation as well?

Thanks ahead of time.

hi its me again.
i have little of the teccie language . .
but would appreciate anyone's opinion on the roland sp-555 creative sampler . .

does anyone have experience of using this equipment live?
are there any downfalls here?
i imagine its essentially a dj-based sampler
. .and i'm a musician (keyboard. vocals mainly)
keen to layer loops of other instruments to create a fuller sound. auto harp. drum. glockenspiel. etc.

would love to hear what anyone has to say here. .

Hey all,

I have tried a few different ones. I own the Boss RC-20 but it doesn't work well when playing w/ other musicians.
I know it's tricky to loop live guitar w/ a band, but I'm looking for the best one out there w/ breaking the bank.
I've tried the digitech jamman: sucks.
I want to lay at least 3 layers, with the capacity to step back, or overdo, if I screw one up.
Any advice?
it doesn't have to be a stompbox, just footswitch compatible.
thanks

Just an intro...

(Most often) Solo singer/guitar-player. I use a Digitech Jamman Looper

within a year the footswitch failed. The power adapter cord at the wall wart was the next to go.

I always loop "on the fly" rather than pre-load loops. Sure it's CD audio bit depth, but I have this thing about "guit-araoke" players. I mean hey, if 5 pre-recorded parts are playing and you add a guitar part, so what?

On the other hand, I do have a library of sound effects, like screeching car tires, explosions, etc, I leave on my laptop to load to the Jamman. But another really lame thing about the Jamman.. it has to be off-line to load samples over it's USB port. There are a number of logistic shortcomings with this model. Anyone found any hacks or workarounds for it's not so swift design flaws?

I always run my looper through mixer aux send and return through a channel to add eq, pan and efx control. Makes it easy to change from instrumet to vocal looping too.

(529 Seabright, Santa Cruz)

I'll play directly at 9 p.m. and then would love it if people would come join me for dancing
to Goth/Steampunk and Swirly Industrial directly afterwards.

This will be the first time I have performed the entire Dayglo Orange Plastic show in Santa Cruz .
I will only use Dayglo Orange Plastic as a source of sound in an hour long show that is very
unusual and, hopefully, very creative.

I hope you can come down and check it out.

Admission is 5 bucks but you are let in for FREE if you are attired in goth/industrial and/or steampunk attire.

EDP Sync with Stylus RMX Drum Software

Does anyone out there use the EDP synched with their computer/DAW/drum-software midi clock? Does sync work well? (Record functions as expected, stays in synch over time etc?)

The old Oberheim's didn't but I have a new one now. However I haven't tried this in 8-10 years and years so I have no idea how to set it up properly---what settings need to be made in Logic or Ableton Live to use the Specrasonics Stylus RMX plug in for drums (mainly) and yet have the EDP's record/overdub/nextloop functions work as I normally expect them to.

Much thanks for any advice on the best way to use Logic (or Mainstage) or Ableton for the routing, effects and drums for use with live EDP looping!

I stumbled across his performance on an Austin City Limits 2004 Festival DVD. I got a written explanation of his live setup from a fan site here:

http://www.howiefan.com/Articles.php?view=430

and a photograph of his stage pedal setup here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:HowieDaypedals.jpg

I've only just begun to explore the possibilites of looping and in the one previously mentioned performance I thought this guy was awful poised and confident building a pretty complex of vocal, rhythm, melody and bass..

I'm interested in comments regarding his equipment setup and info about hardware and software improvements.

recieved yesterday from Mike Nelson in respnse to an e-mail I sent him ....

Hi Shawn,
The hardware has been complete for a few months now and all parts necessary to build a few hundred units have been ordered and received.
We are finishing high level design details hence the questionaire some of you received, and the software is about 60% to 80% complete. It's hard to schedule software development.
What this means is we might make our Dec 31 goal but release will probably slip into Jan 2008. Rest assured that we are pressing as hard as we can, but we want to ensure the pedal is rock solid when released.

FlyLoops Looping Studio download

Here is another free download for a live looper.

Flyloops is an incredibly easy to use live software looper for PCs, it is designed specifically to generate live electronica music as opposed to ambient style or singer songwriter style music. The primary difference is an emphasis on loop interaction and independence and a de-emphasis on loop depth functions (such as randomize and reverse).

Here is a quick breakdown of the functions, please note that all functions can be done immediately and on the fly without stopping playback.

Basic Functions:
- Record independent loop of differing lengths, synced or not
- Stack (layer/overdub) infinitely on any of the loop tracks, with or without decay
- Stop any loop playback immediately or at the next master loop repeat
- Stutter (One-Shot)
- Record a B side compliment which plays serially to any of the 5 primary loops
- Transition any loop seamlessly from it's A to B side

Advanced Functions:
- Consolidate multiple loops into a single loop
- Multiply, Add (append), or Overwrite any loop
- Change which loop is the master
- Stop or Stutter all loops together, or some group of loops
- Crossfade between two groups of loops
- Scratch a group of loops as if on a turntable

Recording:
- Load or Save loops as wav files
- Record a live session including all playing loops and incoming audio (solos, etc.)

MIDI:
- Map any midi command to any function with a simple midi learn function

Coming Soon:
- VST compliance

see

www.flyloops.com

for screenshot, video demos, and free download.

Thanks,
Aaron

Just got this little looper, and I love it. I'm using it for ethnic percussion mostly, with a little melody added every now and then.

Here's the question: If I start with say, a 2-measure loop of basic percussion, can I overdub 4 measures of melody, thus doubling the original loop? Does this make sense?

I"m doing an exploratory show this coming Wednesday, March 26th at META MUSIC (320 Cedar Street, Santa Cruz)
as a way of developing new material for my upcoming 10 week/10 country solo headlining found sound/live looping
tour that I leave for on May 1st.

I will also be on the bill with the Norwegian live looping guitarist Tellef Orgrim
and we will also play a short duet set at the end of the evening.

I will go on at 8 p.m. and play until 9.

Tellef will play for about 20 minutes (his decision) and then we will improvise at the
end of the evening.

I hope you guys can make it out. I have some really fun musical things in store for Wednesday.

META MUSIC is right around the corner from the Blue Lagoon at the corner of CEDAR STREET and BIRCH LANE

my ideal setup would use a hardware looping device, with some pre-recorded audio thrown in the mix (e.g. parts played by instruments that are too large for me to gig with).

does anyone have any experience making this combo work?

i'd like to trigger audio on the computer and have it play in sync with the loops i've just recorded. is this possible, or is my best bet just to set the tempos to match beforehand, and just trigger the audio with a midi key, hoping it all lines up?

basically i'm looking for the simplest way to have prerecorded sounds interact in time with live-looped sounds.

thanks!

Electrix has officially gone under again:

From: condor-electronics temp <ptoms@condor-electronics.com>
Date: February 13, 2008 5:29:07 PM CST
To: repeater-users@yahoogroups.com
Subject: [repeater-users] The Future of Electrix
Reply-To: repeater-users@yahoogroups.com

hi all - I've just learned that Electrix is finally dead. They tried
very hard to make a successful business out of the product line, but
ultimately were not able to make it happen.

Condor Electronics is going to continue to support the line. We have
parts, power supplies, and documentation to carry out service on any
of the Electrix products for the future.

Regarding the Repeater OS 2.4, I will continue to ship the OS upgrade
for the same price as was offered by Electrix. I've made an agreement
to take on the remaining parts stock from Electrix in LA in return
for selling the upgrade and forwarding the proceeds to what remains
of the company. We will ship it in the same format, a CF card. This
trade of parts for OS delivery will allow us to handle continuing
service for all the product line and especially for the Repeater. I
think it's a worthwhile investment to be able to support the
community of musicians that has grown around these amazing instruments.

As for the history, we started working with the original Electrix in
the mid-90s as the only authorized service facility, and we fixed
hundreds of units over the course of business with them. Since then,
we've been following the twists and turns as the company traded hands
three times. We've established relationships with the original
engineering team, and I've been collecting everything relevant to the
products over the years.

That's the story - I'm sorry Electrix finally failed, but it's also a
relief because I'm no longer limited in my support or communications
to the user's group - that's been a real frustration over the years.

best,
No Hiccup

I have a headrush, which is awesome because there is no hiccup sound when I record over the start/stop point. I tried a timefactor, but it has a hiccup sound. Are there any loopers that will fade the sound out, stack sounds, and have no blip sound on the start/ stop time when playing a sustained note?

Setup for percussion?

I'm having trouble finding a monitoring solution for my setup. I'm just getting started with looping. I'm playing hand percussion into an SM57, going into a mic impedance adapter connected to my Boss RC2 loop pedal, then out via patch cable to a Behringer HA400 micro headphone amp which powers a set of headphones with a stereo jack.
My problem is that what comes though the headphones is a weak mono signal in one ear only. Is there a good place in the chain to use a stereo to mono adaptor? I'm sure ditching the headphone amp and getting a little 4 channel mixer or a guitar/ keyboard amp would solve this, but don't want to make the investment just yet. Any suggestions?

electric clicking on BOSS RC-20

Hey folks!
I have an RC-20 BOSS loop station, and I'm using a microphone input.

I don't have much experience with this kind of stuff, so this might just be a technical thing, but I wonder what I can do to avoid this electric pulse/clicking sound that can be heard on my loops. Is it coming from the beat-counter thing (of which the volume is always indeed turned down), or is it an electrical thing (like grounding), or is it from the microphone.

any advice is appreciated...

(and anyone in the SF and East Bay area that does loop-based stuff is encouraged to invite me to look over their shoulder or give me a lesson, as I'm quite inexperienced with the technical side of things).

KAOSSILATOR...! a new fun machine we may see soon on these shores
one can build up loops with it, but only using the internal sounds... too bad.
just touching the surface (ha ha) of what It's capable of! ;-)

help on buying a looping device

Are there any cheap (less that £150) looping devices that will process more than one loop?
I want to get set up but it seems pointless unless I can have more than one loop playing.

I'm looking at Boss RC-20XL and Akai E2 headrush as possibilities, but I'm not sure they are what I'm after.

At moment I have two multieffects with awesome delays, however they still decay.
Basically I need something to replace these, a delay beyond 10 secs is beyond my needs.
However to have two loops of different lengths playing while I carry on over the top is essential.

How much would I have to pay to do this?

Incidently I don't want software, it has to be pedal based really.
I really hope that this is possible.

This question is for Rick, but any others with experience with this amp are welcome to provide feedback as well.

Rick, back sometime ago, you purchased a Vox DA5 battery powered amp and wondered if you could give a little review of it, especially for using with hand drums and percussion?

Thanks,

Imogen Heap - what is she using?

Does anyone know what hardware/software Imogen Heap might be using in this performance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSIbfzK2spg&mode=related&search=

There are a couple of closeups of the hardware she's playing with, but I can't figure out what it is.

In the piece, she creates several independent but synched loops and then manipulates the volumes of each.

I'm assuming the earpiece she's wearing is sending her a click track.

Any thoughts?

I'm very excited to announce that I'll be playing with a fabulous band at the
21 Grand in Oakland this coming Friday night.

The three musicians I've been asked to play with are all phenomenal and innovative
musicians as well as live loopers and the evening is improvisational in nature.

I'll be playing with a killer band with
guitarist Barry Cleveland
bass phenom Michael Manring,
and the innovative pedal/lap steel guitarist Robert Powell
I'll be playing trapset, exotic percussion and live looping as well.

at the 21 Grand in Oakland this Friday night at 8:30.

We'll be opening for the French guitarist/synthesist Robert Pinhas

I'll post the information below. This is a rare honor to be asked to play with these guys
and I'd love it if you could make the show. I so rarely play up in the Oakland/Berkeley area.

Here are the details:

yours , Rick

((((()))))))))

Barry Cleveland writes:

I’ll be playing with bassist Michael Manring, pedal-steel guitarist Robert Powell, and drummer/percussionist Rick Walker, doing a set of mostly improvised music, some of which will involve live looping. If you are familiar with these guys, you know that they are extremely innovative and adventurous players, so it should be lots of fun.

We’ll be opening for the Richard Pinhas Trio. Richard is a Paris-based guitarist and electronic musician often compared to Robert Fripp. He’ll be accompanied by drummer Antoine Paganotti (from the pioneering French prog band Magma) and synthesist Jerome Schmidt, and will stage a full-on looping extravaganza.

The show starts at 8:30, and admission is on a “sliding scale.” (They say that no one will be turned away for lack of funds, which is great for audients, but potentially bad news for the musicians :-)

21 Grand is located at 416 25th Street (@ Broadway) in Oakland. More information about the venue may be found here.

I hope to see you there!

Sup yall,my name is Ray Confer, stage name da bluez preacher. I use my guitar and a boss rc-20xl loop pedal, to create blues songs in live looping fashion. Id like fellow loopers to check my stuff at http://www.mp3.com/srv4uconacher and give me some feedback on the songs. All songs are 100 percent created with the loop pedal. Thanks for your time.

NEW FEATURES: software upgrade for REPEATER

The following is a list of new features in Repeater 2.01:

· ‘What-you-hear-is-what-you get’ looping. Loop pan and routing applied to the input
signal so that recording is completely predictable. May be bypassed if required

· Record direct into overdub for initial recordings

· ‘Bumpless’ looping – advanced control eliminates all loop end artifacts under a wide
variety of conditions (ie. no crossfades)

· Unit wet/dry mix control

· Main output attenuation control

· Tape emulation control via MIDI

· Independent control of track play, stop and direction

· Persistent settings across power cycles

· Sticky settings for rapidly setting up new loops

· Utility menu for deeper control over (persistent) unit settings

· Setting up initial ‘empty’ loops of known size

· Over 25 new MIDI control features

· Improvements to MIDI Real-time outputs

· Improvement to quality of audio for small pitch/tempo shifts

· Programmable unit wet/dry mix

· Stop at loop boundary.

· Positive visual indication of track muting.

· Click loop end identification and routing via main outs or FX sends.

looping magnetic fields of the sun make music?

The study, presented this week at the Royal Astronomical Society's National Astronomy Meeting in Lancashire, England, reveals that the looping magnetic fields along the Sun's outer regions, called the corona, carry magnetic sound waves in a similar manner to musical instruments such as guitars or pipe organs.

kid beyond simply blew away my head. never saw skills like his before - and he was very friendly, answered questions. too sad that his next shows are so far away - and on days where i have to work. can't wait to see a full show of his - and he was very convincing in his point that ableton live is perfect for live-looping.

you lucky folks in the bay area, seems like you can see him regularly.

Looping capabilities of the Kaos pad 3 - how extensive?

they've added more tempo synched, loop related capabilities.

it can save to memory card, and perhaps? deal with multiple loops at once
I've seen brief demonstrations - has anybody given it a good test yet?

I allready have a Kaos pad entrancer, but (at least by itself) it's not a true "looper" as defined here
It can grab and manipulate loops, but not overdub and add to them

I am proud to announce that I have two live looping tracks (one on each)
of the two volumes just released of the 2006 Boise Experimental Music Festival.

I have a solo vocal track in my headling set on Volume One and also a trio improvisation with
two wonderful musicians: Jeff Kaiser and Ted Killian on Volume Two.

There are many wonderful performances on these two discs.

All proceeds go to helping support this amazingly creative music festival, one of the
most exciting, creative and well run festivals of new music that I've ever had the privilege of playing.

You can read about these discs and order them here:
Looking for some feedback

Hey all,

I am a musician / inventor down in Miami, I have been looping for quite some time, and only just now joined here (transplanted from loopers delight, thanks to Rick).

I have a home-grown looper that I use which allows me to control loops independently of one another ... which I figure is pretty useful (but I am looking for feedback, of course). I also layer slightly differently .. instead of using a midi clock, I just have a notification that goes out every time the first loop you record goes back to it's 0 position .... so subsequent loops can start/stop recording on any master loop repeat (no need for multiply functions this way ... I think it is more intuitive... ).

I am trying to get as much feedback as possible since I need to make this as useful and user friendly as possible for both musicians and DJs (and the hybrids). This is a sponsored product and will be completed this spring.

Please check it out at www.flyloops.com.

There are several video demos there (a couple of which you can find on youtibe, if you prefer).

I think watching the videos should give you a good idea of how it works ..... after that, just lemme know.

PS - anyone else here from Miami?

Thanks,
Aaron Leese

NAMM Live Loopers Brunch Invitation

I would like to propose that the
ANNUAL LIVE LOOPERS NAMM BRUNCH
be at 12 noon on Sunday in the same place we always
have it.

We always have a fun time every year at the brunch.........
a nice place to put faces to names here in our community.

I always feel ridiculous but I can't remember the Hotel name
but it is the restaurant that is directly across the street from the
Main NAMM entrance on the right hand side of the road.

You just go in and go to their 1st floor restaurant.

1) Would everybody intereseted in attending please
e-mail me off list so that I can have an idea of how many people to make a
reservation for that day.
2) Would someone rehip me to the name of the hotel and restaurant?

rickwalker@looppool.info

Please just put
(no need for a message unless you want to say hi)

See you all there and please come by and say hi to my brother Bill Walker, Steve Lawson

live dark experimental live looping/noise/found sound/extended vocal show in San Jose this Saturday night

By the way, I"m going to be doing an experimental show utilizing gongs, found objects and extended vocal
techniques at the Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose (366 South First Street between San Salvador and San Carlos)
this coming Saturday night with a creative touring group from Porltand, yourdrugsmymoney.
We will be doing a collaborative set at the end of the night and there is talk of putting this out on yourdrugsmymoneys' record label if it comes out well.

Because I've been so into Power Noize, Noise and Industrial/EBMish stuff lately, my performance will reflect a lot of that
sensibility.

I'm so excited, I just purchase a Feedback eliminator which will allow me to use very heavy distortion with vocals and found objects
without having all the uncontrollable feedback problems that occur with live microphones.

I'll also be projecting my new lo fi, toy digital video animations that I"ve been making at the show.
Come on out to an unusual creative show in the South Bay if you don't have anything to do.

It's 5 bucks at the door (8 p.m. start) and noone will be turned away for lack of funds.

I've been playing with a Boomerang Loop Pedal for years. It works for me but I have no comparison with a lot of other loop pedals. I had no idea there were so many different kinds. What are some of the drawback/positives of the boomerang compared with other Loop Pedal. What would you recomend as an uprade?

I see lots of discussion of hardware here, and an occasional mention of Ableton Live.

I'm kinda exploring the possibilties of software looping platforms. I've just been playing with Lisa (from steim.nl) which is very powerful. Lots of midi control over events; sample stuff on the spot and play it back backwards and that sort of thing. Does anyone use that? Its limitation to me is the lack of use of VST/AU effects.

Next thing I'm trying is to make my own looper in Plogue Bidule.

Or does the perfect live sampler/looper already exist?

I've been considering upgrading my loopstation. Does anyone have any critiques/advice as far as the Echoplex's capabilities? From what I've read, you can get 15 loops simeltaneously, undo and edit them individually, and use delay and other effects.

I'm curious about inputs - xlr, 1/4 inch, midi, etc. Can they each be inputted and phrased to create loops? And can all this be controlled by the footpedals?

Does anyone use this as their main live-looping hardware?

Boss RC-50 and Midi?

To anyone who is familiar with the RC-50:

Is it possible to hook up a Midi foot pedal (like the Behringer FCB1010) to the RC-50 and control more than just three of its functions (for example, to control the following: reverse current phrase, all start, all stop, volume of current phrase with an exp pedal, pan current phrase with the second exp pedal etc.)?

I downloaded the RC-50 manual, and it mentions just three control changes, CC1, CC7, and CC80 - does this mean that only three such functions can be controlled through midi (and hence it would be pointless to use the Behringer unit with 10 pedals and 2 exp pedals)?

sorry if this sounds confusing - seems inevitable when you start discussing midi.
thanks!

Electro-Harmonix 2880 Super Multi-Track Looper

So I've had this unit a few weeks now... I haven't yet got around to trying it out in a live performance situation so I can't speak to its practical abilities and limitations in that respect, but I've sort of got a handle on what it will and won't do and how to operate it (except for the MIDI part, I don't use MIDI being too much of a Luddite and general technophobe myself)

I actually like this piece of gear, although when I begin to list its limations I'm not sure why I like it... well, I haven't owned or used any kind of live looper since I had a Repeater, so it's good to have one again, but I keep comparing it to the Repeater and finding it deficient on many counts:

* Working with tempo: Unlike the Repeater, the 2880 doesn't have any kind of beat detection, NOR does it even have a tap tempo button, which means that if you are trying to make a loop from a prerecorded CD (drumbeat, four-bar chord progression, whatever) it is extremely difficult to hit the button at the exact beginning and end of the bar so you have an even loop that doesn't end early or late i.e. off the beat - The 2880 DOES have a 'quantize button' that can automatically end the loop at the exact end of the bar, but ONLY if the bar is in 4/4 and if the beat of the source material is synched to the 2880's imprecisely adjustable on-board tempo... Moreover, the tempo setup is inflexible in that the slider goes from 30 to 240 BPM in steps (basically the tempo slider doubles as a pitch slider which varies the pitch in semitone intervals from 2 octaves down to 2 octaves up while simultaneously altering the speed of the loop, just as you would by altering the rpm of a tape loop)... which brings me to Rick's point: unlike the Repeater, you have no INDEPENDENT control of pitch and speed of the loop... bummer - And if you record a loop at one pitch and tempo and then want to record another track at a different pitch and tempo setting, then the playback of the original loop shifts to the new tempo/pitch setting as you record the new loop: so if you wanted to create a bass line by doubling the pitch setting during record, you'd have to listen to the original loop at double pitch and tempo while recording, and then switch back to the original setting (which would return your original loop to the normal setting, and make your second loop one octave lower and half-speed)...

* Unlike the Repeater, this doesn't have an external effects send/return circuit, so forget about putting effects on one loop and not on another... I run the 2880 from the effects send on my mixer and back into a channel strip so I can send the loops thru another effects processor, but it has to be applied to all the loops coming from the 2880...

* The built-in metronome is cool for recording loops but useless for live looping unless you want to have the metronome clicking as live accompaniment to your performance (it doesn't record the click track, of course, but it outputs it thru the main outs, instead of just thru a headphone jack for example)...

* If you're planning on saving loops you'll need to buy plenty of compact flash cards to store each set of loops on, since you can only put one loop on each card (one loop meaning four tracks and a two-channel stereo mixdown track) - You can back up loops from the cards to your computer and reload them later onto separate cards to bring to your gig, like if you've got thirty loops you want to keep just back 'em up and only keep five or ten cards on hand... So, no use getting one of these huge 2GB CF cards that with lots of storage unless you're planning on recording 60-minute loops (in other words, using this unit as a four-track recorder with removable drives, as opposed to using it as a looper): a 128MB card holds a four-minute loop (that is, four tracks with unlimited overdubs on each track + a stereo mixdown track) which is as long a loop as I'm likely to need...

On the more positive side of things, I like the footswitch, which offers more control options than the three-button foot pedal option for the Repeater - The 2880 pedal has six buttons (new loop, play, record, octave down, reverse, and track select)... And it does true stereo looping like the beloved Repeater... It has a punch-in button so you can fix one little part of a loop without rerecording the whole track or overdub...

Also I like that when recording a new track after recording your original loop, you can begin the recording at any point in the playback (not just at the beginning) of the first loop, which enables you to easily add some cool counterpoint and syncopation...

A big plus is that I think this model sounds better than the Repeater, which makes it better for in-studio applications: the noise floor is lower, there is none of that chirping with compact flash card loops, and no electromagnetic interference like with the Repeater which used to cause an annoying whine in my powered monitors whenever it was powered on... However, I did notice some faint clicking that would start to build up on prerecorded loops during playback (this was only obvious on loops with silent segments and when listening on headphones)...

I like the mixdown function which enables you to record loops on all four tracks, then do a live mixdown onto a separate stereo channel, manipulating the faders and pan knobs during mixdown... And I like how the track faders double as feedback control when overdubbing onto a single track (adjusting the amount the volume of each overdub diminishes with every repeat)...

In sum, I paid about $550 for the 2880 and foot pedal (foot control sold separately) including shipping, and that's rock bottom pricing from www.instrumentpro.com... if you could find a used Electrix Repeater for not much more than that (wish I hadn't sold mine, stupid me) I'd say get a Repeater, unless you're using it for mainly studio applications and can't deal with the Repeater's noise issues...

I might have more to say when I've more thoroughly explored using this model in live settings (lately I'm having more fun with my new Lexicon MX200 processor, which outperforms my previous Lexicon MPX550 at half the price), but that's it for now...

effecting loops on the fly

I have done a LOT of research on the various loopers and can't seem to find the info I'm looking for. Is anyone aware of a looper that allows you to record multiple loops or tracks, keeping them independent of one another yet synched, and then apply various effects (reverb, harmonizer etc.) to any given track while the whole thing is looping?

For example, i record 4 tracks of data, set them all playing together and then *mess* with any one of the individual tracks while leaving the others dry?

i'm also curious about your favorite effects in general. what, if anything, is the effect that always makes you think "I wonder what this instrument would sound like through THAT"??

On the market for live looping station... recommendations, please?...

I know this topic has been brought up in an older thread but I'd like to resurrect it, in case the market has changed since then...

I'm thinking about getting some kind of looping device, after fruitless searching on Craigslist for months and months for musicians or a band to play with - I have a Boss DD-6 pedal right now, which is very limited in terms of options and features - I *used* to have an Electrix Repeater, and now I am kicking myself for selling it on eBay a couple years ago (I never got the hang of using it and it had certain performance issues I didn't like) - Obviously, I am going to go onto Loopers Delight and read up on some gear and reviews there, but if anyone feels motivated to throw in some suggestions here (no need to give my exhaustive reviews, if you just give the name of what you use and like I can do the research), I'd be happy to read them - It sounds like Rick has the dream setup, with the Gibson EDP (too much money for me to spend right now), the Repeater and other devices - I don't want a whole rack of stuff, just one relatively user-friendly loop station - I play mainly live-miked acoustic instruments (woodwinds) though I would also like to be able to loop line-level inputs like a CD player - I also would like to be able to run the loops through my Lexicon 550 multi-FX processor - *Ideally* I would love to have stereo ins and outs (why I miss my Repeater) but I can settle for mono in / stereo out or mono in and out, I guess (is there anything out there besides the Repeater that enables you to pan or tweak individual loops so that if I have a looped selection of bass clarinet, sax and flute and psaltery, for example, I don't have to have all the loops panned dead center?... maybe even separate outputs for different loops so I could run each loop into a different channel on my mixer) - I sometimes use phantom-powered mics, and my Mackie mixer has two FX send/returns (only mono sends) so I will probably end up placing the loop station in the mixer rather than plugging a single instrument direct into the looper - So far I've looked a little at the Digitech Jamman, the Boss RC-50 (which has some serious functionality issues), the Echoplex (too expensive) - I suppose most of these loop stations are designed for electric guitarists, I don't need built in amp modeling and distortion box effects etc since I'm a windplayer - Again, one thing I want to stress, I'm kind of a technophobe so I don't want to buy something that's so deep in its operational complexity that I'm gonna have a hard time learning it... but something more sophisticated than the DD-6 I have now... under $500... rugged and reliable... I'm not so concerned with saving and storing loops though I suppose that's a benefit... okay, thanks...

Oh yeah, don't even mention computer based looping... like I said I am a technophobe and I don't have the patience (or is it the intelligence) to learn how to make music on a computer...

What's the best inexpensive hardward solution for live looping?

I want to do live looping and have the following capabilities:

1. create short drum loops quickly and easily in a live situation.
2. loop live sounds recorded into a microphone (voice, trumpet, harmonica, jews harp)
3. record line-in instruments, like guitar.
4. be able to turn tracks on and off, change their volumes (mix), and have the hihats, snare and bass drum on separate tracks so I can drop breakbeats, or just cut out the bass drum at times for arrangement purposes.

The most important thing for me is that the equipment be easy to learn, as I'm more a musician than a technically oriented person.

Any ideas?

sound source/ recorder

I am looking for a non-iPod that I can load self-made tracks to be used as a sound source in conjunction with live gear...

Traditionally, I would just go with an MD player/recorder... however, I will be moving overseas and traveling quite a bit this next year and would like to bring music with me without bringing boxes full of cds... (not to mention the occasional DJ opportunities)

So, what I am looking for is:
a portable device, under $300
(user) replaceable battery
line-in recording (even its not the greatest, though better than mono)
a friendly playlist (for jumping around tracks live - "now where is that glitched flute track..?")
can handle WAV and OGG
easy transfer ov files (would prefer it to register as a drive unless there is some sweet software I haven't encountered yet)
decent storage, like 20G

I have been checking out the iAudio X5L... it only has mono line in... and you need a dock to plug into... close to what I am looking for... and..... Is there something better?

I'm excited to announce that I will be flying out to headline the Boise Experimental Music Festival on Friday,April 28th

To celebrate that I will be doing a 2 hour exploratory
show to warm up for that gig at Meta Music in Santa Cruz (in the old More Music
building right around the block from the Blue Lagoon off of Pacific Avenue)
on Tuesday night, April 25th.

so I'm very excited that Jonathan, the owner of Meta Music will be hosting my musical
quirkiness.

Speaking of the devil, I"m also honored that Jonathan will be opening that show with his
long term Acid Folk project, KAMM at 7:30 p.m.

The show is free and I hope to see you all down there. I'll do some fun audience participation
experiments if there are enough people showing up.
***************************
META MUSIC's relatively new location:

For those of you who haven't checked out Jonathan's really creative all vinyl music store, it's a trip. He has done some beautiful design with an already very interesting building (performers play on a narrow baloncy looking down into the main room. He's made a really comfy and beautifully designed chill room right next to the stage and is really into having the place be a hang spot for aficianados of discerning new music and electronica.

Check it out. I love it there.

*************************
I will also be featured at the MAKER Festival at the San Mateo Fairgrounds on the Sunday the 23rd in the late afternoon. This is a fascinating fair that showcases people who make unusual things from all over the country. It gets reported on CNN and national news and is a fascinating day of creativity sharing.

I'll be performing a set and then also doing a demonstration of the latest in live looping technology and techniques
for those interested in the details of that world.
What looper to use live?

I know that many people consider the Gibson Echoplex to be the finest looper out there, but like most people, I find that out of my price range.

I've heard good things about the Boomerang+, but that is a rather huge monster for what it does. I've seen a lot of people use the DL6, but if you have that on the floor, you have to duck down to make changes (and beware its pseudo-stereo).

So I'm looking at the Boss DD20 Giga Delay. Is anyone using it live? What do you think? The price/feature seems unbeatable.

Comments, please.

Loma Prieta- http://www.dark-tekno.com/lomaprieta/
14 inches of uplift, 5.5 feet of lateral slippage, 7.1 on the Ricther scale, 20 seconds long, from a depth of 11 miles. This is the chaos that Loma Prieta unleashes, as duo Phreaki Boi and Jawa blend their styles of d'n'b, noize, broken beats, industrial, and even trance.

Ghreg on Earth- http://www.phosphene.org/
His distinctive sound, heavily influenced by his passion for Industrial Music from the 1980s, IDM from the early 90s and Dark Ambient, evolved and found its way into parties and festivals throughout the United States and the World. His intention is to convey a diverse range of powerful trance dancing experiences to the planet. With this intention in mind, he is quickly being recognized as one of the most sought after psychedlic electronic music producers.

Heartworm-
Disturbed landscape of deconstructed beats, bursts of pure noise and constantly shifting time changes, all tempered with subtle ambience, layered sampling and drenched in effects.(From DHR Bio) Tonight, he steps behind the decks to battle, DTC's very own, Jawa!

TeflonJacket- http://electroset.net
Holding a resident DJ spot with Tokyo Electric and Neurogenesix, TeflonJacket's musical taste was formed during the early 80s when bands like Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Nitzer Ebb were the norm. Harkening to days past, his style can best be described as "Techno Body Music" or new music with a very dark and retro feel.

White Rabbit- www.spaz.org, www.luciddreamlounge.zoomshare.com
Getting his origins from the old skool deathrock and goth clubs such as the Original One Step Beyond, in the South bay, the twilight Zone, Drug#6 and Catacombs to being one of the original creators of A Winter Gone By. Guest appearences at House of Usher and rodericks chamber. Current musical delima hits the dance floor with a twisted cross of wicked breaks, goth, dark electro and house mixed and up with an almost jack dangers style. Current projects include the Lucid Dream Lounge, a dark masquerade cabaret speakeasy and organizing/playing at spaz soundsytem events.

Hardware Drum Looper - Please Advise

Could anyone recommend a hardware sequencer/sampler or a drum machine (with a good acoustic brush kit) with velocity sensitive pads that could be used for live looping.
This device would be a master and MIDI synced with another looper. I would be using this device only for triggering and looping of acoustic brush kit drum sounds, I would be building loops/sequences and quantizing them on the fly, i.e. during performance. I am aware of Ableton Live and its potential, but at this time I am looking for a standalone hardware device.

Thanks,
Rale

World Premiere of LOOPERLATIVE at NAMM in Anaheim next week

I'm off to the NAMM show in L.A. (the National Association of Music Manufacturers annual show is one of the 'mecca' events of the music industry with as many as 80,000 people attending in four days) next week.

I'm very excited as I will be having 8 solo performances
demonstrating the new state of the art Live Looping device,
the LOOPERLATIVE.

Designed by Bob Amstadt, the Looperlative will get it's world premiere
from my good friend, UK bassist Steve Lawson and myself in several different shows.

If anyone is heading down there, we will be at booth 1857 in Hall E and I will
be doing solo shows at 1,3 and 5 on Friday and Saturday and 1 and 3 on Sunday).

Bob told us, flatteringly, that he designed the machine after seeing Steve and I perform together at the San Jose Museum of Art on the first Loop Tour with
Michael Manring and Andre LaFosse a few years ago.

He has been amazing and has incorporated every single idea that Steve and I have given him into the machine, which sports 8 separate 48 khz stereo loops that can be played synchronously or asynchronously. I"ve never met someone in a music company who seems so eager to serve the community
that this product will appeal to.

Additionally, there is an ethernet port built into the device so that people can download upgrades to the unit from the web (and also up and download loops to a computer network).

I feel humbled and excited to be on the cusp of a new technology that will
keep changing the way music is made in live situations.

You can check this exciting piece of gear out at

FAVORITE LOW BUDGET WAY TO MAKE WEIRD NOISES ETC.

a love for generating weird noise is something that we all share,so lets share some of our favorite low budget home brewed methods,
here's one i saw Thurston More do at the height of a guitar soundscape frenzy he unplugged the guitar and plugged the cord into a stereo out at the end of his effects chain then he got down and started twisting all the knobs on the stomp boxes so the effects directly feeding back into themselves were making all these weird occillations.
i constructed this cool thing out of a couple broken old component tape decks, one had a bad motor so i put one of those casette adaptor do-dads that you use to play a portable cd player into a car casette player (shaped like a casette with a wire coming out the top to a stereo 8th inch jack) into it. then i spliced the wire from the casette do-dad to the head that i pulled out of the other tape deck.next you take a sheet of foam core with one self adhesive side, you peel the paper off the adhesive side.then you pull the tape out of some old tapes of weird noises, samples, munudo, whateveryou have laying around, and you put the strips of tape on the andheisive side of the board until it is covered with tape.then you plug the deck into an amp turn it on press play and record set the level and have a blast drawing on the magnetic top board manually with the tape head.....

(yup, it's looping related.) Chaos Butterfly and Matt Davignon are bringing their unique forms of immersive improvised electroacoustic music up and down the West Coast. If you like this stuff, please come to one of the shows, enjoy the music and say hello!

Chaos Butterfly
The electroacoustic duo Chaos Butterfly is Jonathan Segel (violin, guitar, electronics) and Dina Emerson (voice, wineglasses, electronics, etc.). Chaos Butterfly has worked with Camper Van Beethoven (Segel) and the Meredith Monk Ensemble (Emerson), in addition to working with operas, orchestras, and the Cirque du Soleil. Their music encompasses song, soundtrack, storytelling, and mayhem, all created and performed in real time. The instrumentation is a seamless combination of electronic and acoustic sources, including violin, voice, laptop computers, guitar, wine glasses, and various toy samplers.

Matt Davignon is an experimental musician living in Oakland, California. Since 1993, he has developed his own unique style of music, which focuses largely on textures, arrhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. Since 2004, he has been working almost exclusively with a drum machine, run through a series of effects and samplers. Drawing from what he's learned in his previous work in sound collage, field recordings, found objects and prepared instruments, he creates an organic array of drones, gurgles and frantic passages.

A little ODD TIME primer for loopers

In my last reply to PUshing Air's post about a King Crimson compound time signature I realized after writing it that people might not know what I"m talking about with the phrasing syllables that I use from North Indian classical music.

Here's how it breaks down in a nutshell in case you haven't stumble on this in your music education. It's one of the most single liberating concepts that I have encountered rhytmically so I hope it's fun for someone.

TAL: North Indian Phrasing System

The accent is always on the first syllable 'Ta' of the phrase
and you want to sing these as staccato as possible because you want, eventually, to be able to sing them very, very quickly

Make sure every single syllable has exactly the same duration in time.
Set a metronome or drum machine to unnaccented 16th notes and sing along with it until you can sing perfectly in time with the metronome.

An individual time signature can now be set up as a matrix of phrasing possibilities

  2 + 2 + 3
  3 + 2 + 2
  2 + 3 + 2
7/8 = | 3 + 4 |
    4 + 3
    2 + 5
    5 + 2

Sing these or play them slowly, over and over for a couple of days and you'll find that you can do wonderful phrasing combinations in an odd time signature.

For some more advanced fun, try the exercise that I wrote in response to Pushing Air's last post.

Let me know if this makes sense or if you have any questions.

Please go there and upload something interesting you've done from
a live looping performance.

When I get more time, I"ll add some of the things from the

There was a gap in the performances so I did an impromptu 30 minute set
with dishes I found in the venue, my mouth and one lowly DL4.

There's a great thread on Glitch techniques and VST instruments that accomplish it at the Electronic Music Production tribe

I have learned a ton from my fellow computer music producers through this thread. It's worth a read.

But here is the collation of all the VST instruments that they recommend, most of which are free:

What's Live Looping then.

I'd always assumed that the requirement for the looping to be "live" was that all sounds/music would be generated live by the performer.
So that would rule out canned loops, and pre-programmed sequences.
I'm happy with that, and that's certainly what I mean when I call my music "LiveLooping".

...but there's reason why someone wouldn't say, for instance,
"I'm looping, and I'm using Ableton Live, so that makes it Live Looping".
...or whatever.

So what are the "Live Loopers" trying to accomplish?
Do we have a "community of like minded individuals?"

For me, it's the excitement of bringing new technology to live performance, to produce a music which couldn't exist without it, coupled with a conviction that a live performance should be exactly that( i.e. no pre recorded audio or sequences, and preferably no pre-defined tempo).

what say?

It's not about the looper...

OK, it is. But it isn't.

What about the actual musical aspects of looping. Anyone done any circlesinging?

I've snabbed a listen to "Echoes of the Forest" field recordings of Pygmies of the Ituri Forest. If you're into looping, it's must listen.

How about Steve Reich's "Different Trains"?

How about looping music that's not made with a electronic looper?

How about any music?

Bernhard, I have to say, is having a banner month. He is a headliner for this years' Y2K5 Festival; he just produced the best live looping festival I've ever seen and he has a beautiful new debut live looping solo CD out. I will write a full review of this wonderful record as soon as I am able to breathe after Y2K5, but it's a goody. Suffice it to say that you should buy one from him while he is in America (and the shipping charges are low.............lol)

New Live Looping cd, called 'livelooping'

A new cd by andy butler is now available.
You can go to www.andybutler.com to hear excerpts from the album, and even buy it if you like what you hear.
This is result of almost a decade of loop discovery, and I'm really pleased how it's turned out.

"11 tracks of looped guitar, each exploring a different possibility, and each a single unedited performance. Angular melodies, world-beat rhythms, lush chords in classical type harmony, trance sequences, abstract electronica, all woven into a cohesive album of compelling music."

any comments appreciated

Loops in transitions, dj mix

Ok first off this mix does have some minor wrecks and mess up's
so please do not point out the obvious
I did this mix differently than what i normaly do( basic 30 second to 1 minute 30 second transitions). This time I constantly messed with each track sample looping 2,4,8 beats, over looping, filtering, echo, flange, compress,eq kills all in real time heh and at times overkill'n the song. Sometimes i'll start the transition normaly then right in the middle of it loop one or both tracks and let it play out doing a fulll crossfade when i feel it's right.

I did this one mix letting both tracks play out looped for like 2 minutes. This
guy came up to me later and asked me what was the name of that song i just played. I thought Hmmmm i need to play with this idea a bit more, i went back and listened to it again and it did sound like a completely new track.I put this demo together to get input on how it sounds. I've noticed that if i catch it just right it can totaly change the way the mix
is going, the mood of the crowd or create what sounds like a new song. this is 18 mins long and cut samples i took out of a practice mix i did.
I will be afk for the next few days so i'll read anything you post by the weekend

Thanks for any input.
Sample is 17mb mp3 download or stream @ http://waxdj.com/djs/703/

Is the Gibson EDP the king of the hill?

Hello . I would like to get more involved with live looping. i currently use a Boss RC20 and have been thinking of adding another one to loop loops.
Is the EDP the best live looping tool out there right now? Lets hear some opinions.
Thanks

a great free VST live looper

For anyone that wants to play with live looping but can't afford hardware the Ellotronix XL is a great two channel stereo looper with up to 80 seconds of delay.

You can get it free at:

http://www.uv.es/~ruizcan/p_vst.htm

I just used it with Ableton Live, a midi controller and foot pedal to do a show last week and it worked great. It solves the problem of not being able to set the loop length in Live.

Sure wish Ableton would add this feature, I thought for sure it would be in Live 5, but no... :(
